Montréal International Auto Show, January 17-26 at the Palais des congress

(TORONTO, ON – January 9, 2014)  Get up close with the all new Toyota Highlander in Montreal this month, as Toyota Canada takes the wraps off the 2014 model. With exterior styling that’s sleek yet strong, an interior that defines “functional beauty”, lots more space for people and cargo, and an abundance of innovative technology and features, there’s plenty to discover.

“The Highlander helped create the well-mannered, very versatile and popular segment of mid-size SUVs based on passenger car ‘unibody’ construction – and with the 2014 model, we’re doing more than introducing an all-new model: we’re resetting the benchmarks that define this segment,” said Larry Hutchinson, Vice President at Toyota Canada.

“Combining Toyota’s traditional core strength in building vehicles that are dependable, long-lasting and hard-working, the new Highlander puts a fresh emphasis on design and performance that delights the senses.”

The 2014 Toyota Highlander will be on display throughout the Montréal International Auto Show, running January 17-26, 2014.

Have You Switched Over To Your Winter Tires Yet?

slippery_snow-403With temperatures already dipping to the freezing point and some areas of the country already experiencing snow – have you switched over to your winter tires yet?

Remember – there’s no such thing as a good “all-season” tire – just a no-season tire. All seasons tires become suspect when temperatures dip below 7°C – that’s the point where winter tires start to come good. Winter tires aren’t “snow tires” – that’s a term that tire manufacturers are trying to avoid using, because people think the winter tire is only for snow. Not true, winter tires are for cold, snow and ice – they give you superior grip and stopping power.

A very common misconception among drivers of SUV’s and other 4WD vehicles, is that a 4 wheel-drive/AWD vehicle provides them with the safety measures they need when driving on ice. This deadly misconception has no grip on reality (pun intended) whatsoever –a 4WD/AWD vehicle will help you get started from a full stop and will partially help you around corners, but will certainly not help you to stop or slow the vehicle down any faster than a RWD or FWD vehicle. Road Test: 2011 Kia Sorento LX V-6

2011 Kia Sorento LX

If you’ve been reading any of my reviews over the past few months, you might remember that my wife and I are in the middle of a large conundrum: we need a new car to replace her Mazda5, but we have no idea what we want to get. Not only is type of vehicle the problem (car, coupe, CUV/SUV), but so is our budget! We have no idea what we want or how much we want to spend!

In the recent past we’ve gone through the Ford Fusion, Genesis Coupe, Ford Flex and Edge, Honda Crosstour, Ford F-150, Toyota Venza, Prius and RAV4. The Kia Soul is very high on my wife’s list (we had it last year, but another one coming up next week), just to mention a few. This week we’ve got the Kia Sorento. Why not just get another Mazda5? As terrific as it is, that’s not what we do – we never get the same car or even manufacturer back to back, no matter how much we’ve loved the vehicle. For us a two-year lease is too long!

Road Test: 2010 Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD

Text / Images: Iain Shankland

It’s been a couple of years since I last drove a RAV4, but to be honest I don’t remember a thing about it… Toyota gave it a redesign with numerous upgrades for the 2009 model year, so I thought I’d give it another go. Other than the re-design, there were two other situations that made it a perfect time to take the RAV4 out for a spin…

While I was arranging to get one for a test, Toyota were in the middle of a storm of bad press – it seemed like every day a new “failure” or “runaway vehicle” was being announced in newspapers, on TV and of course the internet. As I’ve mentioned before – I think it’s just a witch-hunt. People love to kick successful people/companies when the opportunity presents itself and this was no different. Audi went through it in the ’80’s and just barely survived in North America. Toyota have a stronger and bigger presence, but they will no doubt suffer a black eye for many years because of this.

Road Test Special: Toyota and the Runaway Vehicles

Text: Iain Shankland / Images: Iain Shankland/Toyota

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 6 months or so, you already know all about the problems and media-induced panic that has been attached to Toyota vehicles.

It all started with a California Police Officer driving a loaner Lexus. Apparently the car kept speeding up until it reached 150 mph (241km/h) whereupon he drove it right into a bridge – killing himself, his wife, daughter and brother-in-law. Before destroying a perfectly good Lexus in a ball of fire, his brother-in-law thought it would be a good idea to call emergency services for some advice. I can’t believe that with all of those people combined – their I.Q. didn’t quite reach up to the level of a worm. C’mon people… if you can’t stop the vehicle, bump the gear selector into “N”.. that means neutral – all power is then taken away from the driving wheels. Apply the brakes, pull over to the side of the road and switch off the ignition. That makes a lot more sense than killing yourself. Even just turning the key off or pressing the start/stop button would have stopped the engine! It’s not rocket science.

2010 Lexus RX450h

It’s been a couple of years since I last drove the Lexus RX hybrid. It was so outstanding my wife and I wanted to trade our first-born for one.. too bad we only had a chinchilla to trade.

For the 2010 model, Lexus have re-designed the RX from the ground up… sounds like the perfect reason to grab the keys and see if it can measure up to the previous model…..
