Road Test – 2017 Chevrolet Volt

2017 Chevrolet Volt, Iain Shankland, Road-Test.org, EV, PHEVThe Chevy Volt is the first Chevrolet I’ve driven in probably 20 years. To say I’m not a Chevy Fan would be pretty accurate.  Based on my past experience of owning a Camaro and Malibu, I’d quite happily have watched the brand disappear into oblivion. So why am I driving one? Well fortunately Chevrolet didn’t disappear because they are actually creating some good looking cars and they are at the forefront of the EV revolution with cars like the Volt and Bolt. The new Malibu is a good-looking car, as is the Cruze and I love the Colorado truck, so change is afoot at Chevrolet – time to check out the goods! Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test: 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premium

General Motors have been building electric vehicles [EVs] for quite some time – remember the EV1? GM produced and leased it out to only 660 people living mainly in California and Arizona, it survived from 1996 to 1999 before being recalled and destroyed.

ChevyBoltEV, BoltEV, Road-Test.org, Iain Shankland

Why? There are plenty of theories out there, but aside from being hideously ugly and an advertised range of 70–100 miles that was actually closer to 60, it was never going to set the world on fire.

Although not a raging success, GM showed up at the auto shows in 2002 with a completely different take on the EV, perhaps the most audacious concept car ever – the AUTOnomy. Remember that one?

GM planned to change the way we purchased/leased our cars in the future. We would buy the skateboard or standard “autonomous” platform and shift out whatever body we wanted for any particular need/desire. Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test – 2017 Ford Fusion Energi SE

EV, Logo, Road Test Special, Iain Shankland, 2017 Ford EnergiI’ve loved the look of the present generation Fusion sever since I laid eyes on it – when it’s approaching from the opposite direction it looks a lot like an Aston Martin from the front. However, for 2017 Ford has seen fit to re-style the Fusion to make it look more like a Ford. In addition to the new grill and front fascia it also gets LED headlights, tail lights and fog lights, along a new rear fascia and spiffy redesigned 17-inch wheels. Inside, there is now a rotary-style gear selector – very Jaguaresque, a longer armrest and improved access to the open storage area in the lower dashboard. Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test Special: Living With An Electric Vehicle – A Day-To-Day Comparison of Three Models (INTRODUCTION)

EV Charge Logo, Iain ShanklandLast year a lot had been said in the media about EV’s and how many we’re going to see in the very near future. This year everything regarding EV’s has kicked up another notch with many manufacturers falling over each other trying to be the first with the best offerings to the public.

Various governments have also stepped up and are fully committed to change the automotive landscape from traditional ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles to EV’s (see descriptions of various EV’s below). The incentives vary from Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test – 2017 Jaguar F-PACE R-Sport 35t

2017 Jaguar F-PACE R-Sport 35t, Iain Shankland, Road-Test.org, Jaguar F-PACE, Road TestWhen Jaguar announced the arrival of an SUV a couple of years ago, I thought – Oh no, please don’t do what everyone else is doing!!! Why would they do that?!! Then I saw the pictures… oh my… then I saw it in person at the auto show and I was smitten. Then I got to drive it… This isn’t just an SUV – this is a JAGUAR SUV – it’s an F-Type on stilts, but it drives like a sportscar! Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test – 2017 Ford Focus ST

2017 Ford Focus ST, Road Test, Road-Test.org, Iain Shankland, @FordCanada, @BHGMediaFleetWhen I told my wife I’d booked a Focus ST for a week she asked me why I’d do that when we already drive our own Focus every day… was it any better? Considering its almost 100 hp more than our anaemic 2.0L engine and a whopping 124 additional lbs/ft of torque at a much lower 2,500 rpm instead of 4,600, I’d say it would be well worth taking the time to compare. After a week behind the wheel we’d agree – no it’s not any better – it’s a LOT better – with a caveat… Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test – 2017 BMW 340i Gran Turismo

2017 BMW 340i Gran Turismo, Iain Shankland, Road-Test.org
Back in 2010 we drove the 550i Gran Turismo and came away thoroughly impressed by every aspect of the car – especially its size compared the regular 5-series sedan – it felt more like a 7-series than a 5. This week we’re driving the new 2017 340i Gran Turismo and just like the 550i – it’s way bigger than the series size that it represents, so think of it more as a sportier 5-series than a 3-series. It’s interesting to note that the majority of BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo customers are new to the brand – so BMW are obviously doing something right and striking a chord with the buying public.
