Road Test – 2017 BMW 340i Gran Turismo

2017 BMW 340i Gran Turismo, Iain Shankland, Road-Test.org
Back in 2010 we drove the 550i Gran Turismo and came away thoroughly impressed by every aspect of the car – especially its size compared the regular 5-series sedan – it felt more like a 7-series than a 5. This week we’re driving the new 2017 340i Gran Turismo and just like the 550i – it’s way bigger than the series size that it represents, so think of it more as a sportier 5-series than a 3-series. It’s interesting to note that the majority of BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo customers are new to the brand – so BMW are obviously doing something right and striking a chord with the buying public. Electric Vehicles – The Answer to Every Urban Commuter’s Prayers

…Or Are They?

Iain Shankland, Road-Test.org, Tesla StationAt this year’s Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) the stand-out theme would have to be Electric Vehicles (EVs) – at least that’s where most of the manufacturers seem to be spending their time, energy and design money. And hey, there’s nothing wrong with electric vehicles – don’t get me wrong – but the fact that they’re being touted as an urban commuter – I’m not so sure about that.

Over the past few years I’ve written a couple of articles about EVs and hybrids – their pros and cons, and a lot of people have wondered why they haven’t really caught on. Well, it’s starting to look like the EV has gained enough momentum that it might actually dominate the market in the not too distant future. Manufacturers are all on board, sure there’s the odd hold-out like Mazda, but overall the manufacturers are fully committed to embracing electric – some are also looking at hydrogen and hybrid in tandem – or maybe they’re just hedging their bets. Car Makers Sharpen Their Crayons For April Fools Day

With another April Fools day in the record books it’s time to review what kind of pranks the auto makers have been getting up to. It’s funny to see the extremes they’ll go to just to prove they actually have a sense of humour. Here are our favourites from this year.

First up, the runner up for the best 2013 April Fool’s prank by an Automaker ….

BWM  P.R.A.M.

BMW April Fools, road-test.org

With a royal baby due this summer, BMW proudly announced the launch of the limited edition BMW P.R.A.M. (Postnatal Royal Auto Mobile). Available in Princess Pink or Royal Blue. The soft-top convertible has been designed using our EfficientDynamics technology. With two or four-wheel-drive, it rides as smoothly on a polo field as it does down The Mall and comes with air conditioning and built-in extendable flagpoles as standard. For those who are ‘too posh to push’ this masterpiece of motherhood even comes fitted with N.A.P.P.I.E. (Nanny-Assisting Petrol-Powered Injection Engine).

Road Test: 2012 Ford Edge Limited AWD

Text / Images: Iain Shankland

It’s been a while since I last drove the Ford Edge, so since they’ve re-designed it I thought now would be the perfect time to get behind the wheel again.

I’ve always liked the Edge, but its new duds make it look quite unique and quite attractive from the front. The rear hasn’t changed much unless you view them side by side – that’s the only way to really differentiate the improvements.

Road Test: 2011 Kia Sorento LX V-6

2011 Kia Sorento LX

If you’ve been reading any of my reviews over the past few months, you might remember that my wife and I are in the middle of a large conundrum: we need a new car to replace her Mazda5, but we have no idea what we want to get. Not only is type of vehicle the problem (car, coupe, CUV/SUV), but so is our budget! We have no idea what we want or how much we want to spend!

In the recent past we’ve gone through the Ford Fusion, Genesis Coupe, Ford Flex and Edge, Honda Crosstour, Ford F-150, Toyota Venza, Prius and RAV4. The Kia Soul is very high on my wife’s list (we had it last year, but another one coming up next week), just to mention a few. This week we’ve got the Kia Sorento. Why not just get another Mazda5? As terrific as it is, that’s not what we do – we never get the same car or even manufacturer back to back, no matter how much we’ve loved the vehicle. For us a two-year lease is too long!

2010 Acura TL – SH-AWD

Text: Iain Shankland / Images: Acura

2010 Acura TL

Something happened this week that has never happened before… usually it takes many months and 30-35 cars before “my new favourite” is replaced by another “new favourite car.” Last week I drove the Acura RL and announced it was my new favourite car – it was even better than the out-going Mitsubishi Evo X. Now I spend a day with the Acura TL – with a manual and the wonderful SH-AWD system and wouldn’t you know it…IT is now my new favourite car!!! Two changes in the matter of one week – what is the world coming to?
