Road Test – 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Land Rover Discovery Sport, Iain Shankland, Road-Test.orgI really love the look of the 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport (all-new in 2015) – not to be confused with the LR4 or Evoque! When I saw it at the auto show last February I expected it to be expensive, but not so… I asked my wife what she thought the price was – she’s really good at getting the price within $1,000 in 99% of vehicles.

“Considering it’s a Land Rover: $80-100k” OK, but what do you think it should cost? “I think $60-80,000 would be acceptable with the options and trim level”

How ‘bout $50k the way it’s kitted out? Eyes bug out – I think she’s rather impressed!! But what about after a week – will we still be enamoured with it? Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test: 2015 Range Rover Sport Autobiography

2015 Range Rover Sport Autobiography, Road-Test.orgA number of car companies lay claim to inventing the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), but many people overlook the Land Rover – or even the Range Rover as being the one to really start the trend way back in 1972-1973. I remember watching TV when the Range Rover was first shown to the world and how the press went cock-a-hoop over the stylish and luxury version of the Land Rover – a vehicle that changed very little since the time man discovered fire.

No one can dispute that the Range Rover defined and created the luxury version of what is now known as an SUV, and while many have tried to emulate the Range Rover – there is only one King of the Mountain when it comes to luxury and prowess that knows no bounds. Read the rest of this entry »

Road Test: 2012Range Rover Evoque

Text / Images: Iain Shankland

Range Rover and Land Rover are world-renowned for their tough, go-anywhere prowess and in some cases incredible reliability. From drug dealers to Rap stars to Royal families – this is the quintessential vehicle brand that defines status, yet at the same time it is used around the world as a work-horse on farms, estates and in the U.K. it’s the go-to vehicle for towing horses and other farm animals.

The Range Rover Evoque is brand new and nothing like any other Range Rover or Land Rover ever built.

For starters it’s a four-banger!! Never before has there been a RR/LR with a four cylinder petrol engine under the hood. A diesel one maybe, but not one that sucks on premium unleaded. Get this: it’s also turbo-charged. I know.. they’ve always been V-8’s and sometimes super-charged, but this4-cylinder turbo thing is a complete breakaway from tradition. It’s also a uni-body instead of body-on-frame like a real truck. If you’re a fan of the RR/LR vehicles this is a lot to take in, but there’s one more surprise – it get’s great, no, FANTASTIC fuel mileage. Sacrilegious I know, but its true – a Range Rover that gets great fuel numbers is just not what one would expect. So the question is: Is it any good? Well I’d have to say no, but it is amazing and loads of fun to drive … so it’s better than good!
