19 year old British racer Alice Powell clinched her first GP3 Series Drivers’ Championship point in the season finale at Monza this weekend.

It was Alice’s first time at the Autodromo Nationale Monza and her weekend kicked off with free practice on Friday. It was a productive session as Alice learnt the track and worked with her Status Grand Prix team to set-up the car and get to grips with the hard tyre option. She ended the day in a comfortable 12th position on the time sheets.

GP3 - Daniel Abt, Lotus ARTToday marked the final day of GP3 Series™ second post-season testing at Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo, and the teams were greeted with sunny but cool conditions in the morning. There were some new faces in the paddock with GP3 runner-up James Calado returning for the day with reigning champions Lotus ART alongside Aaro Vainio. Gabby Chaves joined Status Grand Prix and Alex Fontana joined Tech 1 Racing.

The new batch of drivers hoping to impress teams and grab a coveted 2012 race seat included Japanese F3 champion Yuhi Sekiguchi and Formula Arbath vice-champion Patric Niederhauser. And along with the newcomers some more familiar names returned to the GP3 field including American Conor Daly at Carlin.

Felix Da Costa wins thrilling season finale

GP3 - Monza - Status Grand Prix - Felix Da CostaGP3 SeriesAntonio Felix Da Costa took his first victory this season in what was a dramatic final race of the 2011 GP3 Series™. The Portuguese driver finished ahead of championship runner-up James Calado, but the Lotus ART driver was handed a 20-second penalty for failing to take a drive-through penalty after causing a collision with Mitch Evans. Marussia Manor Racing’s Rio Haryanto was promoted to second and Nico Müller took the final podium spot.

Simon Trummer eventually claimed the top spot with a time of 1:45.103 set on his very last lap. The Swiss driver beat out Tom Dillmann who had been top for the majority of the incident filled session. Lotus ART’s championship contenders Valtteri Bottas and James Calado watched the session from the pits choosing to save their tyres for qualifying tomorrow.

The session was interrupted by a red flag following a crash involving Luciano Bacheta. The RSC Mücke Motorsport driver was uninjured. The remaining of the session was drama-free and Calado claimed the top spot with a time of 1:39.025 over four tenths quicker than Addax Teams Tom Dillmann in second.

Any hopes the enthusiastic crowd had of a British winner today were dashed when the heavens open seconds before the formation lap. Nineteen of the of the thirty cars chose to enter the pits instead of joining the starting grid to switch to wet weather tyres, and thus starting the race from the pitlane.
