Ekström claims back points’ lead
There is no doubt that he can rightfully refer to himself as ‘Moscow expert’. Two years after his victory in the first-ever DTM race at Moscow Raceway, Mike Rockenfeller had reason to celebrate in Russia once again. In a turbulent race, the Audi driver steered clear of every incident on the track, made maximum use of his pole position and scored a dominant lights-to-flag victory.
The first impressions of the DTM race weekend at Moscow did not quite speak in favour of Mercedes-Benz.
Audi and BMW dominated proceedings in the two free practice sessions and appeared to be better sorted at Moscow Raceway. But when things gor serious, the brand from Stuttgart was there and secured its first win at the track, opened in 2012, courtesy of Pascal Wehrlein.
In second free practice on Saturday morning, the 24 DTM drivers had to deal with highly changeable conditions.
When Martin Tomczyk started the action in the second session at Moscow Raceway at 10.40 hrs (9.40 hrs CET), the sun looked all set to come out on top in the battle against the early morning rain clouds. With Maximilian Götz (Mercedes-Benz), Martin Tomczyk (BMW), Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz) and reigning Champion Marco Wittmann (BMW), quite a number of drivers usually racing in the most popular international touring-car series also will be involved in this weekend’s endurance-race action at the ‘Green Hell’.
The BMW Motorsport driver line-up for the coming DTM season is complete
Tom Blomqvist will race in the popular touring car series at the wheel of the eighth BMW M4 DTM in 2015. Reigning DTM champion Marco Wittmann, Maxime Martin, Augusto Farfus, Bruno Spengler, Martin Tomczyk, Timo Glock and António Félix da Costa had previously been confirmed as drivers at the traditional BMW Motorsport Season Review on 5th December.
Mattias Ekström scored his second victory in a row in the DTM season finale at the Hockenheimring.
In bright sunshine, the Audi works driver came to the fore against his fellow Audi drivers Mike Rockenfeller and Jamie Green in a thrilling dash towards the chequered flag. With Paul Di Resta and Marco Wittmann, the best-placed Mercedes-Benz and BMW driver followed in fourth and fifth place respectively.
At Zandvoort in The Netherlands, Mattias Ekström scored the first victory for Audi in the 2014 season.
With his Audi RS 5 DTM, he ended up ahead of already-crowned DTM champion Marco Wittmann. At the finish, the Swede had an advantage of 7.4 seconds. With Martin Tomczyk, another BMW driver claimed the final podium slot.
‘30 Years of DTM’ – do you still remember?
