Bernie Ecclestone is tipped to sign up the airline Emirates as a major F1 sponsor on a visit to Dubai on Tuesday.
The Financial Times said the five year deal is worth “about $200m”, making it “one of the biggest” in motor sport. The report said Emirates would join formula one’s clutch of official sponsors, including UBS, Rolex, Tata and LG.
Luxury watchmaker Rolex has signed up as F1’s official timekeeper.
F1’s official website said the “major” deal is a “long-term” one. “This is an exciting step for us at Rolex as the fit between formula one and our brand feels very natural and, like all great partnerships, needs little explanation,” Rolex CEO Gian Ricciardo Marini said.
One of F1’s non-executive directors is looking to get involved with formula one sponsorship deals.
The Financial Times reports that global communications services company WPP, headed by founder and boss Sir Martin Sorrell, is taking a minority stake in the biggest F1 sponsorship agency Just Marketing.

South Korean companies are reportedly holding off before deciding whether to follow the east Asian country into formula one. The brand new Yeongam circuit hosted its inaugural grand prix last weekend, but the only Korean brand involved as a sponsor was LG.

The site location and the primary investor have been revealed by organisers of the 2012 United States grand prix. Zak Brown, boss of the company that represents F1 sponsors including LG, Johnnie Walker and Hilton, said he thinks the news will allay some of the recent scepticism about the Austin project.
