More than 25 drivers with formula one experience will be on the grid at this weekend’s 80th running of the fabled 24 hour Le Mans race.
Near the front, in the premier LMP1 prototype class, will be Allan McNish and Marc Gene, driving for Audi. Scot McNish raced in F1 with Toyota in 2002, while Gene drove for Minardi and is still a Ferrari test driver. Toyota has since left F1 and for 2012 has entered Le Mans, and the Japanese marque’s number 8 entry is a grand prix-superteam featuring Anthony Davidson (Super Aguri), Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso) and one-off 1999 Minardi driver Stephane Sarrazin.

One round removed from its first victory of the season in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón, Muscle Milk Pickett Racing set the fastest time Thursday in testing for the American Le Mans Monterey presented by Patrón. Lucas Luhr posted a best lap of 1:16.88 (104.788 mph) in the Honda Performance Development ARX-03a prototype he shares with Klaus Graf for Saturday’s six-hour race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Seeking a third straight victory at Road Atlanta, Team Peugeot Total is on pole position again for the 14th annual Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda. Anthony Davidson set a blistering 1:07.428 (135.611 mph) lap in qualifying Friday in the diesel-powered Peugeot 908 coupe that he will drive in Saturday’s 1,000-mile/10-hour race with Sébastien Bourdais and Simon Pagenaud.

Peugeot won again at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida on Saturday, this time the Team ORECA Matmut taking victory in America’s greatest sports car race and the opening round of the 2011 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.
In Intercontinental Le Mans Cup 1000km of Zhuhai
Team Peugeot Total produced a blend of panache and suspense to round off the 908 HDi FAP’s career with a resounding victory in Sunday’s 1000km of Zhuhai (southeast China). After monopolising the front row of the grid at the start, the two cars succeeded in dominating the early part of the race before coming under pressure themselves.
Peugeot strikes back in day’s only dry session
Stephane Sarrazin put Peugeot back on top at Road Atlanta on Thursday night with the quickest time in the first dry practice session of Petit Le Mans powered by MAZDA 2. The Frenchman posted a lap of 1:08.777 (132.951 mph) in his diesel-powered Peugeot 908 HDI factory prototype to nip Audi Sport’s Andre Lotterer by more than a second.

For the fourth time in as many years a Peugeot 908 HDi FAP takes pole for tomorrow’s 78th 24 Heures du Mans, with the team’s three cars occupying the first three places just ahead of Team Oreca’s Peugeot in fourth. Changeable weather on the second day of qualifying prevented a new battle for the top spot but allowed Team Peugeot Total to concentrate on perfecting their set up in preparation for Saturday’s 15h00 start.

French manufacturer’s entry part of International Le Mans Cup
Peugeot announced Friday that it will return to Road Atlanta’s Petit Le Mans in September as part of an entry into the inaugural International Le Mans Cup. The French manufacturer – which currently holds overall titles from Le Mans and Petit Le Mans last year and this year’s running of the Sebring 12 Hours with its 908 HDi FAP prototype – joins diesel rival Audi Sport and Drayson Racing as the first confirmed LMP1 entrants for the global championship.

They won a weather-shortened 12th annual Petit Le Mans powered by MAZDA6 at Road Atlanta. Race officials, citing hazardous conditions due to torrential rains that fell at Road Atlanta just past the four-hour mark, called the race at eight hours, 44 minutes running.
Last week saw Peugeot Sport organise a test session with the 908 HDi FAP at the new Motorland circuit in Aragon, Spain
The drivers present at this test were Sébastien Bourdais, Marc Gené, Franck Montagny, Alexander Wurz and Sébastien Loeb. Sébastien Loeb made an active contribution to the test which formed part of a programme leading up to a possible participation for the Frenchman in the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours, given that there is no WRC round scheduled the same weekend.

Team principal Ken Anderson has named Pedro de la Rosa as a possible driver for the new American team USF1 in 2010. De la Rosa, McLaren’s long time Spanish test driver, has also been linked in recent times with Force India and Campos.

Team Peugeot Total’s Franck Montagny set the fastest lap of the week so far
During Thursday’s night practice session for the 12th annual Petit Le Mans powered by MAZDA6. The fast Frenchman turned a lap of 1:07.912 (134.645 mph) in one of Peugeot’s factory 908 HDi diesel-powered coupes. Montagny, a two-time winner in the American Le Mans Series last season, will drive in the 1,000-mile/10-hour classic with countryman Stephane Sarrazin.
“Nothing has been signed”
Franck Montagny has been in touch with the new American formula one team USF1 about a seat for the 2010 season. The French sports daily L’Equipe on Wednesday said the 31-year-old, a former Renault and Toyota test driver who raced for part of the 2006 season with Super Aguri, had exchanged emails with USF1 sporting director Peter Windsor.

He took victory at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca at the end of last year in an Acura LMP2 entry with Franck Montagny. The itch to drive prototypes is one Kanaan wants to scratch in a big way even though Andretti Green Racing did not elect to field an Acura P2 for 2009.
