The fifth and final stage in Peru was just like the ones that preceded it. The cars and trucks, racing on their own separate course, went through another day in hell. The Tacna region and its mountainous dunes showed no mercy, but the competitors got to take a breather with a stretch on the beach prior to the long transfer to Arequipa. Dakar: Can anyone stop the Kamaz juggernaut?

44 trucks will vie for victory in the 40th edition of the rally, which starts in Lima on 6 January

Russian-based Kamaz are looking to extend their domination with a 15th triumph. Eduard Nikolaev, Ayrat Mardeev and Dmitry Sotnikov, all of them young drivers from Tatarstan, will be leading their three crews. Iveco will be leading the resistance with Argentina’s Federico Villagra at the helm.

Dakar: Peterhansel on top of the world

Stéphane Peterhansel emerged victorious from his eleventh-hour duel with Sébastien Loeb, while Cyril Despres completed the Peugeot 1-2-3

97 motorcycles, 22 quads, 63 cars (including 5 SSVs) and 38 trucks —220 of the 318 vehicles that left Asunción, Paraguay, on 2 January— reached the final podium set up in front of the Argentinian Automobile Club building in Buenos Aires.

Once again on top form, Joan Barreda picked up his 4th stage victory but will not be able to prevent Sam Sunderland from winning his first title on the Dakar tomorrow. The title will also be out of reach for Sébastien Loeb who also won his fourth special, but who was unable to shake the supremacy that Stéphane Peterhansel exercises over the rally. Joan Barreda obtained his third stage victory this year following a time penalty received by Michael Metge, but this change in the situation still leaves Sam Sunderland untroubled and more than ever leader of the bike category. Stéphane Peterhansel also picked up his third stage win since the start and regained the lead in the general standings.
