The Perfect Partnership
The acquisition by Tony Fernandes, Kamarudin Meranun and SM Nasarudin, the men behind the Team Lotus Formula 1 squad, from the shareholder consortium led by Corven Ventures, will see the legendary lightweight sportscar manufacturer expand its brand profile and product family.
Team Lotus could be set to tie up with Caterham Cars, a famous British specialist sports car marque.
Sky News City’s business editor Mark Kleinman, who broke the News Corp/Slim takeover reports, said the F1 team’s boss Tony Fernandes is likely to confirm next week that he has bought the Lotus-linked manufacturer.
Lotus and Mansell: Friends Reunited
31 years after Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell made his F1 debut in a Lotus courtesy of Colin Chapman’s eagle eyed talent spotting, his sons Leo (26) and Greg (23) get behind the wheel of the new Lotus Evora GT4 Endurance. The two Mansell boys join Lotus GT factory driver Johnny Mowlem, WTCC driver Stefano D’Aste and Gianni Giudici to take on the gruelling endurance challenge of the Dunlop Dubai 24 hour race which starts on Friday (14 January).
Group Lotus did not comment.
A frustrated Mike Gascoyne has admitted he is not sure Team Lotus will race to the 2011 grid with that name. Even though the separate Group Lotus is contesting team boss Tony Fernandes’ plans, his application to be called Team Lotus in 2011 has for now been accepted by the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone.

There is and always has been only one Lotus, the Lotus started by Colin Chapman. From the beginning Lotus made road cars and raced racing cars. Until 1994, Group Lotus, the road car manufacturer and Team Lotus, which operated the Formula 1 team, were in common ownership with common directors. In 1994, Team Lotus failed and Lotus has not raced since. Since 1994, David Hunt has claimed to have acquired assets of Team Lotus, including its name, from the liquidator.

Tony Fernandes on Friday admitted he would like Group Lotus, the Proton-owned maker of British sports cars, to be involved with his formula one team. But in reality, Lotus Racing – Fernandes’ entirely separate Malaysian-owned outfit – and Norfolk based Group Lotus, seem to be moving even further apart.
