Dani Clos insists he is delighted with his new role as HRT tester, despite some seeing him as little more than a ‘pay driver’.
A reporter for Spain’s Diario AS newspaper admitted to the 23-year-old from Barcelona that when he read the news about his Clos’ new role, he surmised that the driver must have some lucrative backers.
He revealed that he is also talking to teams in Indycar and DTM.
The long-standing need for sponsor support has now become a real “problem” for new drivers trying to break into formula one. That is the claim of Andy Soucek, who in 2009 became the F2 champion but during the course of the 2010 season gave up his role as a test driver with Virgin.
Virgin team boss John Booth has played down reports he is considering replacing Lucas di Grassi for the 2011 season.
Insists his departure “by mutual agreement” was not acrimonious or due to a disagreement
Andy Soucek still hopes to make his formula one debut next year, despite splitting with the new British team Virgin. The reigning F2 champion has been Virgin’s third and reserve driver in 2010, but reportedly decided to leave because he was not being given opportunities to actually drive the VR01.
Andy Soucek is set to terminate his contract as Virgin’s third and reserve driver.
The 25-year-old Spaniard and reigning F2 champion has been disappointed that his role with the new British team has not involved any driving so far. It is understood, however, that his contract does stipulate some test-driving duties.
But the team’s first priority is to solve the reliability issues
Andy Soucek could make his track debut as Virgin’s new 2010 reserve driver this week. The new British team is the only outfit to have held off naming a definite driver lineup for the last four-day test of the winter, to kick off in Barcelona on Thursday morning.

2009 F2 Champion becomes Reserve and Test Driver – Soucek to test Virgin this week
“In a few days the deal will be official”
Confirmation that Andy Soucek will be Virgin’s reserve driver in 2010 is expected within days. We reported last week that the 24-year-old Spaniard, who is the reigning F2 champion, is set to sign with the new British team because confirmed reserve driver Alvaro Parente’s sponsorship has fallen through.
