Hot on the heels of Ferrari’s latest quit threat, Luca di Montezemolo has called for a meeting to discuss the future of formula one.
Last Friday, the iconic Italian team’s president told the Wall Street Journal that because F1 “isn’t working”, Ferrari could turn instead to Le Mans by 2020. “Of course,” Montezemolo said, “we cannot do sports car racing and formula one. It’s not possible.”
New Jersey governor Chris Christie is not worried plans for a formula one street race next June are set to collapse.
Bernie Ecclestone triggered the uncertainty by revealing that the race organisers currently do not have a contract, despite the fact a June 16 date for the ‘grand prix of Jersey’ was ratified by the FIA at the end of last week.
The case will be settled by June 30.
The head of major Ferrari sponsor Santander is being investigated for suspected tax-related crimes, financial news sources are reporting. Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times say Emilio Botin – the red-jacketed F1 paddock regular – is under investigation by Spain’s National Court, alongside several of his family members.
