That didn’t stop him, however, as he immediately drove to a victory for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing in the Spectrum/Honda. F1600 F Championship logoBrandon Newey won the race, but Matias Koykka brought home enough points to edge the American and take the 2012 F1600 Formula F Championship Series title with a strong effort to close the season from pole at Watkins Glen International. Newey edged Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb/Agajanian teammate Adrian Starrantino to the victory ahead of the two Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing Spectrum/Hondas. F2000 Championship Series logoIn 14 qualifying rounds now complete for the 2012 F2000 Championship Series season, Robert La Rocca, the 2012 Champion, has put his No. 10 HP-Tech Van Diemen on pole 12 times. In the final qualifying round of the year at Watkins Glen International, a shortened session left a seven-minute shootout for drivers to run their fastest laps of the weekend, producing another La Rocca pole ahead of Wyatt Gooden and Rob Nicholas. F2000 Championship Series logoAfter starting from pole and briefly losing the lead, Robert La Rocca got around Wyatt Gooden and fended off Gooden on a restart, with the two cars making contact coming to the green and white flags. La Rocca would go onto take his 10th win of the 2012 F2000 Championship season, breaking the existing win record with a bit of drama. La Rocca had already locked up the Championship prior to the race, adding even more points for the pole, and yet another win. Koykka wins at Watkins Glen, one race left to decide title

F1600 F Championship logoMatias Koykka bounced back from his fourth place starting position to take his fourth win of the 2012 F1600 Formula F Championship Series at Watkins Glen for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing. The Spectrum/Honda driver from Finland thus pulls out a 20 point lead (with drops calculated, per Series rules) over Brandon Newey, who finished second, ahead of Koykka’s teammate Neil Alberico, setting up a Championship showdown in the season finale scheduled for Sunday. F2000 Championship Series logoAt the conclusion of two F2000 practice sessions on a very hot day at New Jersey Motorsports Park, it was Robert La Rocca on the top of the time sheets in the No. 10 HP-Tech Van Diemen with a lap of 1:19.054. Following the Venezuelan driver around the Thunderbolt track for the second practice were Kevin Kopp, Wyatt Gooden, Tim Minor – in the Citation chassis, and Niki Coello, in a RFR.

Matias Koykka stood on top of the VIR podium after a closing-stages battle among four cars that saw them running nose-to-tail, three wide, and changing positions lap after lap. The F1600 Formula F Championship Series produced again, with Kyokka’s Spectrum/Honda for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing barely edging out Colin Thompson’s TTO Motorsports Swift DB6/Honda and the Mygale/Honda of Brandon Newey for Bryan Herta Autosport. Championship to Valet, race win to Gooden

Valet won the 2011 F1600 title

F1600 F Championship logoWyatt Gooden remained perfect in F1600 competition, taking his fourth win of 2011 in just four starts, and his second win of the day at Watkins Glen for Quantum Racing Services in a Van Diemen/Honda. The bigger story however, was the inaugural Championship, which went to Bill Valet, who finished third in a nail-biting slip-streaming battle among a number of cars, including closest points rival Tim Kautz, who had to settle for sixth place in the season finale.
