Pedrosa’s victory at Indianapolis means he closes the gap to Lorenzo in the championship
Dani Pedrosa won his second race of the season at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last Sunday, the Repsol Honda rider winning the race ahead of compatriot Jorge Lorenzo on the Yamaha Factory Racing M1, while Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Andrea Dovizioso notched his fifth podium finish of the year.

Pedrosa quickest on first day of Indy action
Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa was the quickest rider in Friday practice at Indianapolis, the Spaniard being the only rider to break into the 1’39 bracket on a green track surface that provided a stern challenge to the 23 riders contesting this weekend’s Indianapolis Grand Prix.

On a sunny race day at Miller Motorsports Park the sixth round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship delivered some great action and two different race winners to the 49,000 strong weekend crowd. In a landmark day for the series, race one saw World Superbike reach its 600th individual race mark.

Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati) scored his first Tissot-Superpole win of the season after setting a lap time of 1 minute 47.626 seconds in the last of three sessions. It was his second career pole position in this class, following the one he obtained back in 2009 at Misano. Despite a few spots of rain appearing on the riders’ visors during a dry Superpole contest Smrz rode with full pace right at the end to earn the perfect starting place for Monday’s two SBK races.

Indiana-based Four Feathers Racing’s team principal Scotty Van Hawk has signed on to mentor and provide race strategy support to BYR / Fogi Racing’s development rider Ben Young for his debut at America’s most historic motorcycle event, the Daytona 200. Young, aboard his Tim Hortons-Sudbury/Yamaha R6 will take to the legendary Daytona International Speedway on March 15-17th 2012.

The intercontinental expansion planned by Auto GP for 2012 keeps getting plaudits.
The Series announced an extended calendar for next year, with 8 events and three intercontinental trips to Brazil, USA and Japan: this means that, F1 aside, Auto GP will be the only open-wheel Series to touch three continents next season.

The Italian driver managed to win both the Series maiden race in Brno and the last one at the Monza grand finale, something that made his season quite special. Now that Auto GP heads for its final 2011 round in Mugello there’s somebody who hopes to do the same: it’s Giovanni Venturini, the young gun fielded by Griffitz Durango.

Formula one needs the US but Martin Whitmarsh has admitted he would have preferred a pair of races on the east and west coasts. After Indianapolis hosted America’s most recent grand prix in 2007, the sport will return to the USA next June to race on a bespoke circuit in the capital of Texas.

Team Alstare Suzuki Fabrizio boosted by Monza podium
Team Alstare Suzuki rider Michel Fabrizio heads off to USA, with increased confidence thanks to his superb podium in the last round at Monza. This will be the fourth time that Miller has hosted a WSBK event and this year’s race once again takes place on a Monday, Memorial Day, a public holiday.
