Indonesian racer builds good momentum at Mugello with maiden points finish

In 2012, Superstars has reached new highs in terms of international presence thanks an high-quality field featuring many stars from all over the world. Coming from Indonesia, experienced open-wheel racer Ananda Mikola made a positive debut in the FG Group-promoted championship. The 2012 Superstars field welcomed drivers from 8 different countries, including Colombian newcomer Camilo Zurcher.

The BMW M3 E92 proved the car to beat today in qualifying for the Superstars International Series round at Mugello, as Bologna-based Thomas Biagi cruised to his first pole position of the season. Biagi led an all-Team BMW Dinamic front row as home favourite Sandro Bettini took the outside pole.

Vitaly Petrov on Thursday dealt a blow to Mugello’s ambitions to join the F1 calendar.

The Russian, who drives for Caterham, said the Ferrari owned circuit in beautiful Tuscany is too dangerous for modern grand prix cars. On Thursday, F1 teams are concluding their third consecutive day of rare in-season testing at the high speed circuit near Florence.

Like Ferrari, Red Bull is another team looking keenly ahead to this week’s test at Mugello.

“Not only do we have many new parts in the luggage,” promised team advisor Dr Helmut Marko, according to Auto Motor und Sport on Monday. “For the first time in a long time, we are also going to give much more attention to the car setup. There are still gaps in our understanding,” he said, a week after Sebastian Vettel’s breakthrough first win of 2012 in Bahrain.

Jenson Button struggled through the London Triathlon on Sunday with tonsillitis.
But the reigning world champion still finished third in his class, despite admitting to having “suffered quite a bit” whilst under the effect of antibiotics. His time of 2hr14mins was about 25 minutes behind the ultimate winner, and seven minutes slower than his 2009 time.
