More countries have followed Britain’s lead in seeing their exclusive free-to-air television coverage of formula one end.
The first bombshell was last year, when the split arrangement between pay-channel Sky and the BBC began for the British audience. Sky’s German arm has shared coverage with free-to-air RTL for years.

Christian Horner has admitted “human error” led to Sebastian Vettel having to start Sunday’s Abu Dhabi grand prix from the back of the field. After qualifying third in Abu Dhabi, the championship leader was asked by his Red Bull engineer to “stop the car” on the track, apparently with a technical problem.

Fernando Alonso’s last hope to rescue his flagging championship charge in 2012 is a spate of technical problems for Red Bull.
That is the view of F1 great Niki Lauda, who told Germany’s Sport1: “Alonso cannot stop Vettel, unless Vettel suddenly gets technical problems. “But with just his driving skills, Alonso can’t stop him now, because Red Bull’s progress has been too good.”

The breakthrough Shanghai winner, who also finished second recently at Monaco, is quoted by Germany’s Sport1 as insisting the Mercedes is “absolutely the fastest car” at present. At the same time, Pirelli’s Paul Hembery is reported as having tipped Rosberg’s teammate and Monaco polesitter Michael Schumacher for pole and victory this weekend.

Volkswagen, the German carmaking giant, has played down suggestions it could launch a formula one project some time soon.
“There are always rumours about Volkswagen and formula one,” said Jost Capito, who has taken over from Kris Nissen as the head of the Wolfsburg-based company’s motor racing boss.

On paper, reigning back-to-back champion Sebastian Vettel’s second place on Sunday doesn’t look bad. But Melbourne was in fact the first race since before either of the German’s title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011 that a Red Bull car failed to lead a single lap.

Bild am Sonntag said Mercedes already knows Hamilton after powering his F3 title in 2005.
Lewis Hamilton has been earmarked by Mercedes as a potential replacement for Michael Schumacher beyond the end of this season. That is the claim of the German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag, following the Stuttgart marque’s recent denial that Schumacher has already been offered a new two-year contract for 2013 and 2014.
