All eyes on Germany!
While the footballing world will be devoting its attention to the final of UEFA’s EURO 2012 tournament next Sunday, European motorsport will have eyes only for the Nürburgring and round three of the World Series by Renault. It promises to be quite a weekend too, with races taking place in all four WSR events: Formula Renault 3.5 Series, Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Eurocup Megane Trophy and Eurocup Clio.

Dr Helmut Marko, team owner Dietrich Mateschitz’s right-hand man on F1 matters, is not sure if the 2012 car project is on schedule. Adrian Newey, the fabled designer of the winning Red Bull single seaters, has often been late to draw a line under a new car before its debut test.

So what does Vettel think about his championship present?
Red Bull insists the champagne is not yet on ice, but the team’s owner has already decided what present he will be giving Sebastian Vettel for winning the 2011 world championship. “The same as last year,” Dietrich Mateschitz said in an interview this week with the German news agency DPA. “His championship-winning car.”

Ferrari is the first team to announce its intentions to follow Red Bull down the path of ‘flexible’ front wings. Red Bull’s rivals had hoped a new bodywork flexibility rule for 2011 would close the loophole that allowed the front wing of some cars last year – notably the title-winning RB6 but also the Ferrari – to bend towards the track.

Vettel not as good as Mansell – Hamilton
2011 could be set to stage a repeat of last year’s flexible front wing saga. As Red Bull dominated the pace with its ultimately title-winning RB6 in 2010, rivals pushed for better scrutineering checks after noticing the extremities of the front wing bending towards the track. “I see him (Alonso) as my Prost … if you were to say ‘choose a driver’ I would clearly choose Ayrton (Senna). And maybe I would put him as Prost,” Hamilton told British newspapers.

Williams will likely have an “interim car” at the test rather than the new FW33
Five teams are likely to have not yet launched their 2011 cars by the time of the opening pre-season group test beginning 1 February. That is the claim of Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, contradicting other reports that said Williams and Lotus will be ready with their new single seaters at Cheste’s Ricardo Tormo circuit near Valencia early next month.

Red Bull keeping F1 engine ‘options open’ – Horner
Red Bull’s 2011 car will be a further evolution of the pace-setting cars of the past two seasons. This year, the championship-winning RB6 was an evolution of the similarly Adrian Newey-penned 2009 car, which although beaten to the title by Brawn was ultimately the quickest package.

Amid intense speculation about his future, Daniel Ricciardo has returned to his native Australia unsure if he is on the cusp of his formula one debut. After the 21-year-old so impressed during the young drivers test at the wheel of the title-winning RB6 in Abu Dhabi, reports have linked him with Sebastien Buemi’s seat at the Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso for 2011.

Adrian Newey has nominated 2010 as the worst season in his long formula one career in terms of “petty finger pointing” from rival teams. As the Red Bull car designer’s RB6 model dominated the timesheets this year, some of the team’s championship rivals complained about alleged technical illegalities.

Alguersuari is under contract with Red Bull through 2013
Jaime Alguersuari could test Red Bull’s title-winning RB6 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, the Spanish sports daily Marca reports. Currently, only the new world champion Sebastian Vettel is scheduled to drive the Renault-powered car at Yas Marina later this week, when the F1 teams will get their first taste of the new Pirelli tyres for 2011.
