Mexican Gutierrez is struggling so far in 2013
Peter Sauber has played down suggestions the Swiss team might be considering ousting underperforming rookie Esteban Gutierrez.

Sauber could be on the verge of being sold, according to the well-connected Swiss newspaper Blick.

“At the season opener an old rumour resurfaced,” wrote veteran correspondent Roger Benoit. “Is Sauber being sold?” Benoit said that, in the past, Peter Sauber usually categorically denied such rumours, but new boss Monisha Kaltenborn told Blick: “These rumours have always existed.

Sauber’s ultra-slim sidepods work well, team co-owner, founder and former boss Peter Sauber has revealed.

The Swiss team stunned its opposition when it launched the new Ferrari-powered C32, featuring the smallest sidepods seen in modern times in formula one. The innovation, whilst providing an obvious aerodynamic benefit, raised questions about whether the tight packaging could house radiators good enough for adequate cooling.

Peter Sauber has declared himself happy with 2013 team racer Esteban Gutierrez, following the Mexican rookie’s first test of the pre-season at Jerez.

“Last year we were not entirely satisfied with his performance in GP2,” the Swiss team’s founder, co-owner and former boss told Motorsport Aktuell. “Sometimes we were even disappointed, so we didn’t know exactly what we could expect from him,” added Sauber.

Peter Sauber has urged Robin Frijns, the Swiss F1 team’s new reserve driver, to find a race cockpit in another series for 2013.

Recently, Dutchman Frijns – the new Formula Renault 3.5 champion – was interpreted as having criticised the Hinwil based team for not giving him “much to do” in 2013 as he prepares to serve as reserve driver.

Sauber will reveal its 2013 car, the C32, in the days before it makes its track debut at the start of winter testing.

Team founder Peter Sauber had already announced that the new Ferrari-powered single seater will run for the first time at Jerez on February 5. The Swiss team on Thursday invited the media to an official launch event at its Hinwil headquarters, on 2 February.

McLaren will launch its 2013 car on the last day of January, the famous British team has announced.

A media statement issued by the Woking based outfit offered no further details except to say the MP4-28 unveiling “will take place in the UK”. It is likely most other teams will also reveal their new contenders around the same period, immediately before the three-test winter pre-season period begins in Spain in early February.

Just a week after the longest-ever F1 season ended, Peter Sauber is already looking ahead to the first official action of 2013.

The Swiss team’s founder revealed in his column for the Sonntagsblick newspaper that Sauber’s 2013 car – the Ferrari-powered C32 – will be tested for the first time at Jerez on February 5. “I’m very confident,” Sauber wrote. “Because the technical rules are not changing much, we can build on the C31. We are currently on schedule.
