Heikki Kovalainen is a strong candidate to become a test driver for official F1 tyre supplier Pirelli.

But Paul Hembery, the Italian marque’s F1 boss, admitted it all depends on whether Pirelli’s contract to supply tyres to the pinnacle of motor racing is extended. “This question is still open,” he is quoted by Finland’s Turun Sanomat.

Reports that Kamui Kobayashi would be unveiled as Pirelli’s new F1 test driver on Wednesday were wide of the mark.

The Italian marque’s Paul Hembery said in Milan that, so long as the contract to supply tyres to F1 teams is extended beyond 2013, Jaime Alguersuari and Lucas di Grassi will almost certainly keep their jobs this year.

Paul Hembery has named a trio of potential candidates to be F1 tyre supplier Pirelli’s test driver in 2013.

The Briton, who is the head of the Italian marque’s F1 programme, confirmed that Brazilian Lucas di Grassi’s testing contract runs to the end of next year. “Lucas does a great job for us. After next year his continuation depends on our decision to stay or not in 2013,” Hembery told Brazil’s Totalrace.

Pirelli tester and former Virgin race driver Lucas di Grassi is now involved in plans for the FIA’s new ‘Formula E’ category.

The governing body’s president Jean Todt has signed a deal with Addax GP2 and GP3 team owner Alejandro Agag and other Hong Kong-based investors to promote the new single seater series that will debut in 2014. The cars, to be developed by official tester and Brazilian di Grassi, will be powered only by lithium batteries and electric energy.

Hembery explained that Pirelli getting its hands on a 2012-spec test car would require the teams to agree

The notoriously-small operating ‘window’ of this year’s Pirelli tyres could have been avoided, with the help of the competing formula one teams. That is the claim of the Italian marque’s F1 chief Paul Hembery, who said the sport’s official supplier did not foresee the full characteristics of the 2012 tyre.

Pirelli test driver Lucas di Grassi has defended the F1 tyre supplier following Michael Schumacher’s criticism.

Schumacher attacked the Italian marque’s 2012 product after the Bahrain grand prix, complaining that the tyres wear so fast that drivers often have to take corners at half-pace like the safety car.

Lucas di Grassi has admitted that even his continuing role at Pirelli is not a ticket back onto the F1 grid.

“I’m in the best possible position technically, as the driver with knowledge of the tyres – almost choosing them for next season – it puts me in a very comfortable position. “Of course I want to race again with a team and I’m working on it,” said the 2010 Virgin driver, who was replaced by the now Marussia team with Jerome d’Ambrosio at the end of his only season in F1.
