Bernie Ecclestone is tipped to sign up the airline Emirates as a major F1 sponsor on a visit to Dubai on Tuesday.

The Financial Times said the five year deal is worth “about $200m”, making it “one of the biggest” in motor sport. The report said Emirates would join formula one’s clutch of official sponsors, including UBS, Rolex, Tata and LG.

South Korean companies are reportedly holding off before deciding whether to follow the east Asian country into formula one. The brand new Yeongam circuit hosted its inaugural grand prix last weekend, but the only Korean brand involved as a sponsor was LG.

The site location and the primary investor have been revealed by organisers of the 2012 United States grand prix. Zak Brown, boss of the company that represents F1 sponsors including LG, Johnnie Walker and Hilton, said he thinks the news will allay some of the recent scepticism about the Austin project.
Late last year, the South Korean brand was unveiled as an official backer of the world championship, with its branding on the TV broadcasts, timing graphics and trackside reported to be costing up to $15m per year.
Bernie Ecclestone has moved to play down the impact the global financial crisis may have on the world of formula one.
As predicted, the South Korean electronics giant LG on Wednesday was revealed as an official formula one sponsor.
