Atherton, star competitors receive distinguished honor
A number of figures from the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón have been elected into The Road Racing Drivers Club for 2010. Thirty-one new members for the prestigious organization were announced over the weekend – many with roots in the Series and sanctioning body IMSA.
At a press conference in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Toby Theatre, attended by all IndyCar owners and drivers, the IZOD IndyCar Series announced its long-awaited chassis plans for 2012 and beyond. May 21

Lola-Mazda leads tight LMP contingent
Guy Smith put Mazda power out front at its home track with the fastest time in Friday’s first official practice session for the American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patrón. Dyson Racing’s English ace posted a best lap of 1:14.335 (108.385 mph) in the Lola-Mazda coupe that he will drive with Chris Dyson and Andy Meyrick.

The 2010 season marks the 53rd year of motorsport at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Always a fan-favorite, the venue has a rich history of sports car competition dating back to its earliest days. So it’s no surprise that Patrón Highcroft Racing’s Marino Franchitti also has a soft spot for the picturesque circuit on the Monterey Peninsula.

USF1 not asking to sit out early 2010 races
“I can’t say any more than that we will definitely be on the Bahrain grid.”
Team sources have denied suggestions that USF1 has asked to be excused from the opening races of the 2010 season. According to Italy’s Gazzetta Sportiva, the American team has requested dispensation to sit out the flyaway rounds Bahrain, Australia, Malaysia and China in March and April, and instead make its formula one debut the following month in Barcelona.

Mosport victory is story of the year
Corvette Racing won again in the American Le Mans Series as fans voted the team’s first GT2 victory at Mosport in August as the Story of the Year for 2009. Johnny O’Connell, who made his 100th start in the Series, teamed with Jan Magnussen in the third race for the GT2 version of the No. 3 Corvette C6.R during the Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport weekend.

Patrón Highcroft Racing had its own special ride as well at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to close the 2009 American Le Mans Series. De Ferran and Simon Pagenaud won the Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patrón after the retiring Brazilian legend’s thrilling duel with Adrian Fernandez in the final 30 minutes of the four-hour classic.

Retiring Brazilian legend secures pole position at Mazda Raceway
He claimed pole position for the Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patrón, the final race in the Brazilian’s lengthy career. de Ferran’s best lap of 1min 11.20secs in the XM-backed Acura ARX-02a barely beat out good friend and close rival David Brabham in the Patrón Highcroft Racing Acura, but was enough for him to top the timesheets for one final time before heading into the retirement he announced in August.

Gil de Ferran will retire as a race driver at the conclusion of Saturday’s Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patrón at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. In contrast to his first farewell, announced after he won the 2003 IndyCar Series season finale at Texas World Speedway, de Ferran gave everyone plenty of warning about his Swan Song II, revealing his plans at Mid-Ohio in August.
