Paul Ricard has recruited Alain Prost to lead the talks with Bernie Ecclestone about reviving the French grand prix in 2013.
Media sources RMC Sport and L’Equipe said the four-time world champion and former F1 team owner has travelled to Abu Dhabi this weekend, to step up the talks with the F1 chief executive. RMC said Prost’s meeting with Ecclestone is scheduled for Saturday.
France’s new sports minister has confirmed there is some doubt the country will return to the formula one calendar next year.
Bernie Ecclestone announced recently that, with a French race having been absent from F1 since 2008, Paul Ricard could – starting from 2013 – share an annually rotating date with Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps.
Amid France’s push to return to the F1 calendar, it appears Magny Cours is not yet out of the game.
Prime minister Francois Fillon, however, has earmarked Paul Ricard – the well-known test circuit at Le Castallet near Marseille – as the host. But it was Magny Cours that hosted the French grand prix between 1991 and 2008.
