The official FIA preview of this weekend’s Belgian grand prix overlooked arguably the most famous moment of Eliseo Salazar’s career.

Chilean Salazar, who will make his debut as the driver steward at Spa Francorchamps, contested races for minor F1 teams between 1981 and 1983, and also tasted action at the Indy 500, Le Mans, Daytona, Dakar and world rally.

Cyril Despres wins his third Dakar in Buenos Aires after a last stage won by his support rider Ruben Faria. In the car category, Carlos Sainz gets his first Dakar victory after resisting the ultimate attack by Al Attiyah, who wins the last stage for just 36’’.
The many navigation mistakes of his contenders allowed Marc Coma to finish with the best time of the day in the bike category and to move up four places in the overall standings. Moreover Italian rider Luca Manca, who was ranking ninth this morning in the overall standings, had to be evacuated from the track after a very serious fall in the early hours of the stage.
In the cars category, Volkswagen is putting its cards on the table with Nasser Al Attiyah, who achieved both best clock and nr.1 position in the standings. The day’s special stage goes to David Frétigné, who gets his eighth stage victory in a Dakar finishing 43’’ ahead of David Casteu, who still remains leader in the overall standings.
