Just a week after the longest-ever F1 season ended, Peter Sauber is already looking ahead to the first official action of 2013.
The Swiss team’s founder revealed in his column for the Sonntagsblick newspaper that Sauber’s 2013 car – the Ferrari-powered C32 – will be tested for the first time at Jerez on February 5. “I’m very confident,” Sauber wrote. “Because the technical rules are not changing much, we can build on the C31. We are currently on schedule.

If Sauber’s biggest sponsor has its way, Esteban Gutierrez will next year line up on the grid alongside confirmed 2013 driver Nico Hulkenberg. Gutierrez’s fellow Mexican Sergio Perez, who is heading to McLaren, was until now the cream of Sauber backer Telmex’s F1 programme for the last two years.

Barely a day after Kimi Raikkonen won Sunday’s thrilling grand prix at Yas Marina, the track will return to life on Tuesday when the final three day ‘young driver test’ begins. Six teams have already run their young driver days this year, so just Red Bull, McLaren, Lotus, Sauber, Toro Rosso and Caterham have stayed behind in Abu Dhabi for the session.

Williams and Sauber could be in the mix for victory at Silverstone this weekend.
It is believed the high average corner speeds at the British track will suit the Williams – after Pastor Maldonado won the team’s first race in seven years on the similar Barcelona layout – and Sauber’s tidy C31, which has been on the podium twice in 2012 so far.

Following his latest podium triumph, Peter Sauber has once again played down suggestions Sergio Perez could soon be bound for a top team.
After Mexican youngster Perez almost won March’s Malaysian grand prix, rumours began to swirl that Sauber’s engine supplier Ferrari could snap him up for the works team. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo recently played down that possibility at least in the short term, but Perez was back on the podium in Canada, adding fuel to the old rumours.

The Ferrari-powered C31 is the best car in Sauber’s long history, according to team founder, boss and majority owner Peter Sauber.
The Swiss team made its grand prix debut with Mercedes’ support in 1993 and even won a race during the recent era of BMW ownership. But the white and grey C31 is the best yet, Sauber said, after Sergio Perez returned to the podium in last weekend’s Canadian grand prix.

Sauber was the team with the biggest update package as F1′s ultra-rare in-season test began on Tuesday.
Kamui Kobayashi was in charge of the revised C31, which including a new exhaust and front wing represented “the biggest update package” of all the teams at Mugello, according to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport.

Ever since Sauber has been running teaser ‘Out of the blue’ and ‘True blue’ graphics on its engine cover livery in China and Bahrain, speculation about the identity of the forthcoming sponsor have been swirling in the F1 paddock.

After Sergio Perez’s surprise push for victory in Malaysia three weeks ago, things are looking bright on the Sauber balance-sheet.
The small Swiss team announced in Shanghai that it is continuing its deal to promote the North American country with colourful ‘Visit Mexico’ signage. “We can assume that our good results in the first two grands prix have contributed to the renewing of the agreement,” said team boss Peter Sauber.
