Peter Sauber has slammed as a “lie” suggestions Romain Grosjean and Lotus apologised for last weekend’s Belgian grand prix crash.
Fernando Alonso, who narrowly escaped injury when the now-banned Grosjean’s Lotus flew across his cockpit at Spa, confirmed that the French driver subsequently said sorry by text message. And Lotus boss Eric Boullier said Grosjean has also spoken to the others caught up in the shunt, including Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez.

Fernando Alonso has rejected claims F1 should consider abandoning its standing-starts in the wake of last Sunday’s Belgian grand prix.
The Spaniard was lucky to escape serious injury when the now-banned Romain Grosjean’s Lotus flew dangerously close to Alonso’s exposed cockpit opening. The incident has triggered renewed calls for F1 to ramp up the cars’ head protection, while some have even suggested the sport might follow Indy’s lead by getting its races up and running with a rolling start.

Michael Schumacher on Sunday played down Bernie Ecclestone’s suggestion the Mercedes driver is set to return to retirement.
“I’m sorry that he’s leaving us not being a winner (with Mercedes),” the F1 chief executive told BBC One television before the Belgian grand prix. Schumacher, 43, smiled when asked about Ecclestone’s comments after the race.

The race started with disaster for several of the front runners who ended up in a heap at La Source. Whatever the hopes and dreams of the drivers at the front of the starting grid for the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix – from championship front-runners Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton to the likes of Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez, two of the more unexpected occupants of the front two rows – many of them would rapidly end amid a cloud of carbon fibre shards and debris, just 60 metres off the start line.

The official FIA preview of this weekend’s Belgian grand prix overlooked arguably the most famous moment of Eliseo Salazar’s career.
Chilean Salazar, who will make his debut as the driver steward at Spa Francorchamps, contested races for minor F1 teams between 1981 and 1983, and also tasted action at the Indy 500, Le Mans, Daytona, Dakar and world rally.

The technical concept known in the paddock this year as ‘double DRS’ looks set to be banned for 2013.
Mercedes debuted the controversial straightline speed-boosting concept earlier this year, moving Lotus to lodge an official protest. But instead of taking the FIA’s decision to allow Mercedes to keep the system to the international court of appeal, Lotus emerged with a new interpretation of ‘double DRS’ during practice at Hockenheim recently.

Pirelli has announced the first three tyre nominations for the second half of the 2012 season in Belgium, Italy and Singapore.
At Spa, the home of the Belgian Grand Prix, the P Zero Silver hard and P Zero White medium tyres will be nominated, allowing the drivers to meet the demands of a circuit that puts plenty of energy through the tyres.

Spa-Francorchamps will continue to host the Belgian grand prix for at least the next three years.
Jean-Claude Marcourt, economics minister for the local Wallonia region, told public broadcaster RTBF that the “agreement in principle” for the 2013, 2014 and 2015 seasons was reached with F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.
Caterham F1 Team has confirmed that EADS, the aerospace and defence group, has joined the team as Official Partner, with its logos appearing on the CT01 2012 race cars and across the whole team from the Belgian Grand Prix.
