Laguna Seca returns to the World Superbike calendar in 2013

Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) proved the fastest rider on day one at Portimao, with a 1 minute 43.196 second lap taking him ahead of Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing). Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) was third, and completing a sequence of different machines in the top four places, Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) was fourth.

This was Melandri’s first double as an SBK rider and the first double for the official BMW team.

Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) made a real play for the 2012 eni FIM Superbike World Championship title today by putting in a double win of the highest quality, overcoming Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) in both 20-lap contests at the classically sculpted Brno circuit.

A much delayed finish to the Tissot-Superpole session, due to an oil spill and the time required to clean up the track afterwards, saw Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) take pole for the seventh time this season. His winning lap time of 1 minute 58.010 was a new best lap.

Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) went second quickest

Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Ducati) improved on his morning time to also head up the first qualifying session at Brno, setting a time of 1 minute 59.452 seconds before rains arrived at an inopportune moment, then falling heavier at the end of the session.

Biaggi has a wonder day as he extends his lead

Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) left Misano with the sound of his fan club members’ voices ringing in his ears after he completed a home double that will long be remembered by all 67,000 weekend spectators. He pushed his career win total to 19 today. These were Biaggi’s second and third wins of the year, but the first since the opening race in Australia, way back in February.

Changeable weather conditions played a major part in proceedings during raceday at Assen, with the first race stopped and then re-run over only nine laps, and the second race bringing forth a variety of tyre choices on a damp initial track surface that saw the podium places change frequently.
