In his ninth try at winning North America’s most prestigious sports car race
Team owner Michael Shank put his faith in a stock car driver. And that driver – A.J. Allmendinger – put in three grueling hours at the wheel of the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian Ford/Riley Daytona Prototype to win the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona.

After 18 hours of racing in the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona, the stage was set for a final, six-hour battle between the No. 60 LiveOn.com Ford/Riley from Michael Shank Racing and the No. 01 TELMEX/Target BMW/Riley from Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates for overall honors.

At the 12-hour mark, nine different leaders had paced the field with the defending race and series champion No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley Daytona Prototype of Chip Ganassi Racing and its sister No. 02 Target BMW/Riley dominating large portions.

The forecast for this weekend’s Rolex 24 At Daytona couldn’t be better. Although central Florida did see extreme weather earlier in the week when thunderstorms and 70 mph winds left a trail of damaged structures in its wake, the storm’s effect on Daytona has been to put a shine on the preparations for one of the most iconic endurance races in motorsports.

Lola-Mazda leads tight LMP contingent
Guy Smith put Mazda power out front at its home track with the fastest time in Friday’s first official practice session for the American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patrón. Dyson Racing’s English ace posted a best lap of 1:14.335 (108.385 mph) in the Lola-Mazda coupe that he will drive with Chris Dyson and Andy Meyrick.

Several GRAND-AM drivers and teams, many with ties to New York City, visited Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday to promote the upcoming Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races at Lime Rock Park.

After a history-making 2009 Atlantic Championship season in which she became the winningest woman in series history, Simona De Silvestro had a successful two-day test in an HVM Racing/Team Stargate Worlds IndyCar at Sebring International Raceway last week with an eye toward a possible run in the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series. “She was very impressive,” said HVM Racing owner Keith Wiggins.
