However, with 2.8s covering the leading drivers, Mikkelsen has a big fight on his hands in his bid to win his first IRC event on asphalt and extend his title advantage.
Jan Kopecký has claimed a dramatic final-stage victory on Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés after an engine misfire slowed rival Andreas Mikkelsen with his first win in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge on asphalt in his grasp.


Andreas Mikkelsen, who will defend his Intercontinental Rally Challenge title with SKODA UK Motorsport in 2012, says he is not afraid of the close nature of the competition in the IRC and believes it’s actually making him better as a driver.
French firm Michelin helped Andreas Mikkelsen to the IRC drivers’ crown, its fifth in a row, and SKODA to the IRC manufacturers’ title while the Japanese Yokohama organisation celebrated IRC Production Cup glory with factory Subaru driver Toshi Arai.
