Toro Rosso to run Kevin Ceccon and Stefano Coletti at Young Driver Test

Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi – Line up
Auto GP Series champion Ceccon to make F1 testing debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso in Abu Dhabi

AutoGP - Kevin Ceccon 1GP2 - Hungary - Trident Racing - Stefano ColettiAt the forthcoming young driver test which runs from 15 to 17 November at the Abu Dhabi circuit, Scuderia Toro Rosso will run Stefano Coletti and Kevin Ceccon.

Coletti, who was born in Monaco on 6 April 1989, has competed in the GP2 Asia and GP2 Main series this year, although his race season was cut short after an accident at the Spa-Francorchamps GP2 meeting. He was back in the cockpit for October’s GP2 test at Barcelona, topping the time sheet at the end of the final day.

Ceccon from Italy, was born on 24 September 1993 and this year he won the Under-21 category of the Auto GP Championship before going on to take the overall title in the same series. He also drove in the GP2 Main series, the youngest driver ever to do so. Both men will be taking part in the Abu Dhabi GP2 race prior to the test.

Franz Tost: “Scuderia Toro Rosso is well used to training young drivers and we are pleased to add Coletti and Ceccon to the list of students who have been through the Scuderia Toro Rosso school. Neither of them is part of the Red Bull Young Driver Programme, which is down to the fact that those drivers currently on the programme are still too young and inexperienced to deal with a Formula 1 car.”

Test Schedule:

  • Tuesday, 15 November – Coletti
  • Wednesday, 16 November – Ceccon
  • Thursday, 17 November – Coletti in morning, Ceccon in afternoon

Auto GP Series champion Ceccon to make F1 testing debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso in Abu Dhabi

Kevin Ceccon is ready to become one of the youngest drivers to have ever taken the wheel of a Formula 1 car. The Auto GP Overall and Under 21 champion was indeed chosen by Scuderia Toro Rosso to drive the Italian team’s car in the Abu Dhabi rookie test, that will take place on November 15-16-17 just after the Emirates Grand Prix.

On the first day of this test Ceccon will be 18 years, 1 month and 11 days old, meaning that he will be one of the most precocious drivers in motorsport history. In this regard, Kevin even managed to beat Sebastian Vettel: the German driver, who was just crowned World F1 Champion for the second time in a row, did his first F1 test with Williams when he was 18 years, 2 months and 20 days.

For Ceccon this will be a huge chance, even more considering that he will drive the STR6 for one and a half day, so having the time to assimilate the procedures and the complex systems of a modern F1 car.

While the test will be a very important opportunity for Ceccon, for Auto GP it’s a testament of the high level reached by the Series, that nowadays is considered a very interesting scenario by F1 teams that are looking for new talents.

Enzo Coloni: “We are very proud of having the Auto GP champion taking part in the F1 Rookie test in Abu Dhabi, it’s the proof of how the F1 environment is looking to the Series with great interest while searching for the champions of tomorrow, thanks to a grid quality that for the second year in a row presented the highest standards. I believe that thanks to its technical side, mainly the high power output from the engine and the lack of ground effect, Auto GP can be a really good school for drivers that are hoping for a future in Formula 1; I’m sure that Ceccon, who did really well both in Auto GP and in GP2, will be up to the task with Toro Rosso”.

AutoGP - Kevin Ceccon

Kevin Ceccon: “It’s unbelievable how this year in Auto GP changed my life. In just one year I passed from F3 to winning both Auto GP titles, debuting in GP2 and fulfilling the dream of driving an F1 car with a competitive team as Toro Rosso. I wasn’t even thinking about this until some days ago and it feels like a dream, but I’m fully aware that even after such an amazing year I’m just at the beginning of my path. I have a lot to learn, and this will be my attitude for this test, aiming to gather as much experience as possible from this great opportunity and hoping to boast a very good performance at the same time”.

Kevin Ceccon to make F1 debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso in Abu Dhabi

Kevin Ceccon’s magic year isn’t over yet: the Italian driver, who in 2011 clinched the Overall and Under 21 titles of Auto GP and quickly emerged as one of the most talented drivers of the new GP2 breed, is ready for another amazing achievement: Kevin was indeed chosen by Scuderia Toro Rosso to drive the Italian team’s car in the Abu Dhabi rookie test, that will take place on November 15-16-17 just after the Emirates Grand Prix, so becoming one of the youngest drivers to ever take the wheel of a Formula 1 car.

For Kevin this test is the latest step of a lightning-quick career that saw him pass from karting to the F1 debut in just 4 years, going through wins in both KF2 and KF3, in F3 (he was 4th overall in the 2010 F3 Open) and then in Auto GP this year, boasting an impressive GP2 debut in the meantime.
