ARRC: Formula Car Grids Set for 2009 Edition at Road Atlanta

The grids are now set for the formula car classes at the 2009 America Road Race of Champions

Following two qualifying sessions at Road Atlanta. As part of the winged formula car group, which was highlighted by F1000 Championship race field, multiple drivers battled for the Formula S and Club Formula Continental pole positions.

In cool, but sunny conditions, Canadian Jacek Mucha was the quickest FS race pilot in the 20-minute morning qualifying session, turning a lap of 1:21.813 in his Swift 014.a. P2 in FS was the Star Mazda of Victor Seaber, having edged Paul Schneider’s Formula Enterprise. Among the CFC contingent, Steve Myers secured the provisional pole position his Reynard 89SF, edging Paul Knight’s Van Diemen RF93 with a quick lap of 1:32.152.

Rolling back on-course a short time later, following the lunch break, the FS and CFC drivers were forced to overcome a brief black flag period before attempting to better the fast times from the morning session. Mucha retained the Formula S pole position in the afternoon session, lowering his quick time to 1:21.518.

With no one able to better his morning time, Seaber remained P2 in the class, ahead of the Star Mazda of Doug Peterseon. Myers secured the Club Formula Continental pole position by lowering his best time to 1:30.072 in the afternoon session, while Ardie Greenamyer advanced to P2 in CFC, ahead of Knight.

The non-winged formula car group at the 2009 ARRC featured Club Fords and Formula First taking to the high-speed 2.5-mile road course. Steve Robertson, piloting a Van Diemen RF79, earned the CF provisional pole in the morning session ahead of Phil Kingham’s Zink Z10C, turning a fast time of 1:34.134.
Driving a Evolution CM-1, Robert Clark was the driver the rest of the Formula First drivers were chasing, thanks to a lap of 1:39.466. P2 in the morning session was longtime class supporter Bill Bonow in a Campbell Motorsport Evolution.

When the 15-minute afternoon qualifying session got underway it initially appeared as though few, if any, of the Club Ford or Formula First drivers would be able to better the morning times.

As the session progressed, multiple drivers were however able to find a little more time. As a result, Steve Brooks placed his Van Diemen RF81 on the CF pole position, bettering Robertson’s morning time. Don Baggett also improved his best time in the afternoon session, taking third on the grid.

Among the FST contingent, no one was able to better the morning fast times of Clark and Bonnow, giving the duo the top two starting position for the 2009 U.S. Formula First Grand Prix. Carl Middlegge will start P3 in the class.

The formula car drivers return to action after the lunch break on Sunday (November 8), with a pair of 20-lap races at Road Atlanta as part of the 2009 American Road Race of Champions.
