Elan and Van Diemen show championship-winning form at runoffs
Elan Technologies cemented itself further as one of North America’s premier race car constructors
With not one but two victories in the recent SCCA National Runoffs at Road America. Elan-constructed entries won in both sports racer and open-wheel categories.
In C Sports Racer, Matt Miller of Orland Park, Ill., led every lap en route to victory in his rookie showing at the Runoffs. Miller won an extremely close and competitive event with a 0.128-second victory in one of the most exciting races of the weekend.
Miller began from second on the grid and used the power and handling of the Elan DP02-Mazda MZR-R to leap into the lead at the first turn.
The purpose-built EP02 defeated the established Atlantic conversion cars in the championship event.
“We had a really strong motor all weekend and I knew we were going to have a good start,” Miller said.
“As long as we qualified toward the front I knew we could get through Turn One near the front. We just needed to maintain a good pace and keep the car on the track. I definitely had the advantage on the straights, but the brakes were fading toward the end of the race. We were fortunate to get the win today.”
Elan’s Van Diemen company dominated the Formula Continental championship with a victory for Nicolas Coello in his Van Dieman RF-01. It capped a weekend that saw Van Diemen cars take the top five qualifying spots (and eight of the top nine positions), sweep the podium and set the five fastest speeds through the track’s speed trap.
Special kudos go to Arms Up Motorsports and its five-car Elan effort. Arms Up took advantage of newly constructed parts from Elan, all available to the entirety of its customer base, to place four cars in the top-seven. Revere Greist was the highest-finishing Arms Up entry.
“We can’t thank Elan enough for its hard work,” said Arms Up team manager Brent Borland. “They made a huge difference and it is only beginning to pay off. We look forward to the offseason development and can’t wait to see what Elan has in the works.”
Elan Technologies is a multi-faceted race car and engine building entity comprised of Elan Composites, Elan Power Products, Elan Precision Engineering and Van Diemen.
