F2000 Championship Series opener at VIRginia International Raceway this weekend
Venezuelan driver Robert La Rocca set the fastest lap during testing for the F2000 Championship Series opener at VIRginia International Raceway this weekend. La Rocca, driving for HP-Tech, clocked in at 1:54.701 in HP-Tech’s No. 10 Van Diemen, switching over from the RFR chassis he has previously ran. F1600 graduate Wyatt Gooden was second fastest for Quantum Racing Services.

Koykka in the Spectrum
Finnish rookie Matias Koykka paced four F1600 Formula F Championship Series test sessions at VIR on Thursday prior to the opening doubleheader weekend of the 2012 season. The Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver was out front in all of the day’s sessions in the No. 10 Spectrum/Honda entry.

MW Arden’s Mitch Evans quickest on day two at Silverstone
The final pre-season test concluded in Silverstone today before the GP3 Series heads to Barcelona next month to kick start the 2012 season. The session got underway under dark clouds on a chilly morning at a slippery circuit which was declared wet at the start of the test. Maxim Zimin stepped into the Jenzer Motorsport and was fastest for the first hour until Tio Ellinas in his Marussia Manor Racing car took control of the timesheets. The morning test was eventful: five red flags occurred with several drivers getting caught out in the tricky conditions.

“We have lost him somewhere in China,” a spokesman for the Lotus team grinned to SID news agency, adding that the 2007 world champion was stuck in heavy traffic and therefore could not appear for a press conference.

Red Bull will split in two directions this weekend in China, as the defending champions seek to return to the pace.
After a less than satisfying start to the 2012 season for the previously dominant energy drink owned team, Dr Helmut Marko said this week that Red Bull has “a plan” for how to get back on track in Shanghai and beyond.

McLaren and Red Bull are the teams to bet money on after the early phase of the 2012 season.
That is the view of Jaime Alguersuari, the former Toro Rosso driver who is now a commentator for British radio as well as Pirelli’s new test driver. The Spaniard told Europa Press news agency that Ferrari, whose Fernando Alonso won the rain-marred Malaysian grand prix three weeks ago, remains “one step below” the current pacesetters.

Lotus F1 Team targets carbon neutrality
Lotus F1 Team reiterates its commitment to minimising its environmental impact with measures to reduce and offset its carbon emissions. Through commitment from existing partner Trina Solar and through a new relationship with Emissions Spot Trading organization Advanced Global Trading (AGT), the team targets significant carbon emission reduction and carbon neutral status in 2012.

Two publications are reporting strong rumours that Lotus is preparing an official protest against Mercedes’ controversial F-duct system.
Germany’s specialist Auto Motor und Sport said the Enstone based team could file the protest in Shanghai on Thursday, following stalemate meetings last week between technical directors and the FIA’s Charlie Whiting.

Proton, the Malaysian carmaker, has an option to buy 10 per cent of the F1 team that bears the name of its sports car marque Lotus.
Rumours about Group Lotus’ health ramped up this week after it emerged that its title sponsorship of the Genii-owned Lotus team has been “terminated”. Group Lotus responded angrily to the subsequent speculation, albeit admitting it is grappling with “problems”.

“Visit Mexico“ brings colour into play
The North American country is promoting itself with the individually coloured letters during 12 of the remaining 18 Grands Prix in the prominent position on the back of the rear wings of the two Sauber C31-Ferraris. At all championship rounds the nation’s name will be present on the cars’ nose cones, on the racing overalls and helmets of drivers Sergio Pérez and Kamui Kobayashi, as well as on the team’s equipment.
