Opening the team’s enhanced social media activities for 2012

To mark the approaching 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship and the start of pre-season testing, the Williams F1 Team has launched an interactive countdown app on Facebook to give fans exclusive content on the team’s 2012 race car, the Williams Renault FW34.

James Hinchcliffe missed appearing at last year’s Canadian Motorsports Expo because he was taking part in an IndyCar test at Florida’s Sebring International Raceway. In the time since that test, Hinchcliffe has been extremely busy, and he’ll have a lot to talk about when he takes to the CME’s Mazda Stage on Sunday, February 12.

Connery won six races in 2011
2011 Rookie of the Year standout Kyle Connery will be back in 2012 to run for the F2000 Championship Series title, only this time switching from his no. 91 Van Diemen to a new RFR chassis. Connery finished third in the 2011 title fight, driving for CC Autosport with James Lee Racing, winning six races along the way, including sweeping Road Atlanta and the season finale at Watkins Glen.

IMSA solidifies its development series’ race control staff
Motorsports veteran Randy Hembrey will bring 30 years of racing experience into the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Development Series race control when the IMSA season kicks off with the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring event, March 14-17, in Sebring, Fla.

Renault prepares for the launch of the 2012 season as first pre-season test gets underway at Jerez
Renault Sport F1’s preparations for the 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship stepped up as the first of the three pre-season tests got underway today at the Jerez Circuit, Spain. Each of Renault’s four partners, Red Bull Racing, Williams F1 Team, Caterham F1 Team and Lotus F1 Team, put their new 2012 challengers through their paces for the first time following individual media launches.

Williams rejoins Renault for its engine partnership.

The Williams F1 Team unveiled its 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship season entry, the Williams Renault FW34, at the Jerez circuit in Spain today. This year marks the team’s 35th year competing in the sport which it will do with a revitalised line-up.

Amid the European cold snap, Franz Tost admits he was worried Toro Rosso might be late for its own car launch.

The STR7 was unveiled on Monday in the Jerez pitlane, a day ahead of its testing debut. “When the trucks left Faenza on Saturday night I was worried we would not arrive in time,” La Gazzetta dello Sport quotes the relieved team boss as saying.

Red Bull raised eyebrows throughout the F1 world on Monday by showing some glimpses of its 2012 car.

Although detailed images are not yet available, the ‘stepped nose’ on the RB8 features a mysterious air intake. “Why?” wondered Germany’s Bild newspaper. Spain’s Marca said the intake is “surprising and unprecedented” among the growing field of 2012.

Lotus – the former Renault team – will continue to receive the French carmaker’s backing in 2012.

The Renault chassis name has now departed the grid, but Renault remains one of F1′s few engine suppliers. While the French marque’s focus is the championship-winning Red Bull team, the word ‘Renault’ remains prominent on Lotus’ new black and gold E20 car livery.

Giedo van der Garde has admitted to surprise at his inclusion in Caterham’s test plans this week.

Originally, the former Lotus team scheduled the four days of the Jerez session to be split evenly between Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli. Italian veteran Trulli, however, has been shunted from Thursday’s schedule in favour of van der Garde, the Dutch former GP2 driver who has been signed as Caterham’s 2012 reserve.

Morcom is back in a RFR for 2012.
Nathan Morcom has confirmed that he will contest this year’s F2000 Championship Series in the USA. It will be the 19 year-old Sydney driver’s second campaign in the ‘development’ openwheeler series, which will run over seven double-header rounds from April until October. As in 2011, Morcom will team with Primus Racing with backing from building material suppliers Direct Plasterboard Outlet and Rondo, and motorsport fashion brand Racer Inc.
