Müller with the icing on the cake

DTM driver surprises in the rookie tests in Marrakesh by setting the fastest time

Müller with the icing on the cake The Formula E tests held this Sunday in Marrakesh were contested – inter alia – by a bunch of DTM drivers, with Nico Müller shining in particular.

On the street circuit the Swiss set an fastest lap time of 1:19.651, with his Audi e-tron FE04, thus being nearly a second faster than each of the other 20 Formula E rookies involved n the tests. With this time, Müller even broke the lap record that had been established one day before, on the race day, by fellow Audi driver Daniel Abt.

“My first day in a Formula E single-seater was a really successful one,” said Müller. “I truly enjoyed it and could complete a lot of laps. And the fact that I was the fastest was the icing on the caked.” Behind him, Pietro Fittipaldi (Jaguar, 1:20.597) and Maximilian Günther (1:20,657) finished second and third respectively.

Furthermore, Nico Müller was joined by the three former DTM Champions Paul Di Resta, Gary Paffett (both Mercedes-AMG) and Bruno Spengler. They all made their comeback in the cockpit of a single-seater after quite a while. Former F1 driver Di Resta finished fourth with a 1:20.774-minute lap, Paffett (1:21.351) came 11th and BMW’s Spengler (1:24.127) had to settle for finishing second to last. “It was a massive challenge as I made my first outing in a single-seater since 2004,” he explained. “The car’s response differs extremely to what I’m accustomed to. And it was somewhat weird for me that I could hear all the mechanical noises what isn’t the case when you are driving a car with combustion engine. For instance, you can hear every time when the chassis hits the track.”
