Fernando Alonso poised for Toyota LMP1 test in Bahrain

Alonso is set to share running in the Toyota TS050 Hybrid LMP1 with rising Thomas Laurent and Mike Conway

2017-10-22_1005Fernando Alonso looks set to enjoy his first LMP1 test in Bahrain next Sunday ahead of a possible entry to the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year, with multiple outlets reporting the two-time Formula 1 world champion will feature for Toyota at next Sunday’s FIA World Endurance Championship rookie test.

Multiple outlets including Sportscar365 reported on Tuesday that Alonso will be part of Toyota’s line-up for the one-day test following the 6 Hours of Bahrain next weekend, marking his first public running in a sports car.

Alonso will make his sports car racing debut at January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona with United Autosports, acting as a precursor to an appearance at Le Mans in 2018 as part of his push to become just the second driver in history to complete the Triple Crown of Motorsport.

Alonso is set to share running in the Toyota TS050 Hybrid LMP1 car in Bahrain with rising LMP2 star Thomas Laurent and existing Toyota racer Mike Conway, both of whom have been named by the Japanese marque on the official entry list, published on Thursday. While Alonso does not feature on the entry list, more names are set to be added at a later date.

Toyota is yet to confirm its WEC plans for the 2018/19 ‘super season’, but is expected to continue with its two-car effort despite being the sole manufacturer signed up to race in the LMP1 class following Porsche’s withdrawal.

The WEC rookie test has seen a number of F1 names appear in recent years, including Robert Kubica and Juan Pablo Montoya, who have tested with ByKolles and Porsche respectively.
