Fontes-Barbosa (Mercedes SLS), Guedes-Aguas (Ferrari 458 Italia) share GTSprint poles
With just 21 seconds to go in qualifying Luigi Ferrara took full advantage of his last flying lap at Portimão to give R.R.T. and the Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé their maiden pole in the Superstars International Series.
For Ferrara it was also the first pole this season as he topped the charts in 1’52″159 beating Gianni Morbidelli. The Pesaro-based man, driving an Audi Sport Italia-prepared Audi RS5, stayed on top until the very latest stages only to be knocked down at a last-gasp by less than 0.3 seconds. The two Mercedes-AMG Romeo Ferraris cars will share the second row tomorrow with Vitantonio Liuzzi and Thomas Biagi respectively ending up in third and fourth. Both the drivers sitting in row 3 tomorrow, Max Mugelli on the Team BMW Dinamic M3 racer, and Fabrizio Giovanardi on the Petri Corse Porsche Panamera, were penalized for not respecting the track limits but secured good results at the end of the day. Francesco Sini (Chevrolet Camaro), Mauro Trentin (BMW M3) and rookie Jonathan Giacon (Audi RS4) ended up not too far away to round out the top-10.
In GTSPRINT, a spectacular battle developed between Ferrari, Mercedes and Audi, and Both the 15-minute sessions were contested until their closing stages. In the first one, the debuting Mercedes SLS fielded by Sports&You for Fontes-Barbosa took the top spot in 1’45″895, while the AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia driven by Guedes-Aguas made it to the front for Race 2 in 1’47.078, followed by their Mercedes-powered rivals. Audi, with the Team MTM R8 LMS model driven by Thomas Schöffler and Filipe Albuquerque, ended up with one second and one third place. Glauco Solieri, driving the Autorlando Porsche 911, took fourth in both occasion. The top-5 for Race 1 was rounded out by Tkac-Studenic (Ferrari 458 Italia – Dino&Co Racing Team) while in Race 2 Merendino-Di Benedetto (Autorlando – Porsche 997) edged the Corvette Z06.R of Del Castello-Necchi (RC Motorsport).
The SUPERSTARSWORLD Teams and Drivers will have a busy Sunday. Race 1 of SUPERSTARS will be the first underway at 11:00 AM followed by GTSPRINT Race 1 at 12:00 PM. Race 2 for SUPERSTARS will be kicking-off at 15:10 PM while the weekend will be rounded out at 16:30 by GTSPRINT Race 2. All times are local (GMT+1).
