“It was a tough race today” – Conway
Conway, 29, driving the No. 18 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Honda for Dale Coyne Racing was looking to have the same fortune he had had at the previous double-header in Detroit, a pole and two podiums! Unfortunately Conway qualified 20th on the 1.744 mile, 11-turn street course and had to work his way through the field.
However this didn’t faze him and by lap five he had moved up a couple of places and with his excellent fuel saving skills was able to stay out longer than most, eventually pitting on lap 30 from fifth position. Rejoining the race in 16th, he started to work his way back through the field and with 30 laps to go was 10th. On the second to last restart with 15 laps to go, Conway picked up two more spots before settling for seventh on the final lap.
“It was a tough race today,” said Conway. “I think we have improved the car, but we still have some areas where we can gain some more. We are definitely going in the right direction and with warm-up tomorrow, we will be able to try a few more things, which will help. The car seemed to have good pace and hopefully we can transfer this to tomorrow’s race and make it even better. The guys did a good job today and we were able to salvage some points with that P7 finish. It will be tough race tomorrow starting from the back so hopefully we can do it all over again.”
In 57 starts, Conway has earned 16 top-10 finishes, five top-fives and two wins. However in the four starts he has made this year, he has had two podiums including one win and a pole. This seventh place finish today earned him 26 points putting him 24th in the championship standings.
This morning Conway had qualifying for Race 2 tomorrow. Despite making some changes to the car from yesterday’s session, he will be starting 24th. The race will start at 8:30pm GMT.
