Young people given opportunity to ‘hangout’ with McLaren and GSK sports scientists

As part of GSK’s Scientists in Sport programme

McLaren GroupYoung people are being invited to join a Google Hangout with sports performance experts from the McLaren Group, home of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team, and GSK. 

Scientists in Sport is a campaign run by GSK, in partnership with the McLaren Group, which uses the excitement of sport to inspire young people to study science, technology, engineering and maths.

The campaign includes the ‘Fast Forward Challenge’, where budding scientists have been challenged to devise a test which could be used to improve a Formula 1 driver’s reactions. Schools that have made it through to the final are now being invited to the first ever Scientists in Sport Google Hangout, to ask McLaren and GSK questions about the science which makes sporting success possible.

The Google Hangout will take place at the official Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+McLaren. Pupils, teachers, science clubs and youth groups are also being invited to watch live or to view the footage which will be available on YouTube to learn about the exciting science behind sport.

Discussing the Scientists in Sport campaign, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “Formula 1 couldn’t happen without some of the brightest scientific brains working to develop amazing technology to make our cars go faster and our drivers achieve their potential. F1 is just one of the extremely creative, varied and rewarding opportunities that are open to young people if they study science and maths.

He added: “GSK’s Scientists in Sport Google Hangout is a unique opportunity for schools across the country to get an insight into the science that helps us to win races.”

GSK’s Scientists in Sport programme fully supports the science curriculum for 11-14 year olds and provides teachers with resources, including interactive activities, lesson plans and lab ideas, and worksheets for use to help bring STEM to life in the classroom via a dedicated website.
