Sato clings on to championship lead with 6th place at Silverstone

The first of the weekend’s two races took place this afternoon

130601 AutoGP Silverstone Race 1 KSKimiya Sato narrowly retained his Auto GP Championship lead by finishing in 6th place in today’s 14 lap race at Silverstone.

His team-mate and fellow Japanese racer, Yoshitaka Kuroda, took the chequered flag in 12th.

Kuroda, who had never before driven at the challenging British circuit, got his first taste of the high speed track in free practice yesterday. Two half hour sessions were quickly followed by qualifying. Sato set the 6th fastest time, just 1 second off the pole, whilst Kuroda qualified in 15th place.

The first of the weekend’s two races took place this afternoon. Both Euronova drivers struggled to get off the line and Sato lost three places, completing the first lap in 9th position. Kuroda pitted at the end of lap 6, rejoining the action in 15th.

Sato waited until lap 12 before making his obligatory pit-stop. A quick turn around by the Euronova boys insured he didn’t lose positions and thanks to his race pace he rejoined in 7th. At the end of the 14 lap race Sato was classified 7th and Kuroda 13th but a penalty awarded to race winner Giovesi promoted them to 6th and 12th respectively.

Tomorrow’s race will see Sato start from the second row and Kuroda from row 6. Sato’s main aim will be to keep Championship rivals Campana and Ghirelli behind him until the chequered flag falls.
